HDI, GII, GHI and other global indices

Human Development Index (HDI)
  • A composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and income indices used to rank countries into four tiers of human development.
  • It was created by the Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq and the Indian economist Amartya Sen in 1990 and was published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
  • The UN report covers 185 member states of the United Nations (out of 193), along with Hong Kong and the Palestinian territories; 8 UN member states are not included because of lack of data. (Total - 187 countries)
  • 2013 - Rank 1 - Norway (Very high human development)
  • 2013 - Rank 136 - India (Medium human development)
  • 2013 - Rank 187 - Niger (Low human development) (lowest HDI)
Global Competitiveness Index
  • Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) is a yearly report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF)
  • Since 2004, the Global Competitiveness Report ranks countries based on the Global Competitiveness Index, developed by Xavier Sala-i-Martin and Elsa V. Artadi. The Global Competitiveness Index integrates the macroeconomic and the micro/business aspects of competitiveness into a single index.
  • 2013–2014 ranking - Rank 1- Switzerland (most competitive economy in the world) 
  • 2013–2014 ranking - Rank 60 - India 
  • 2013–2014 ranking - Rank 148 - Chad (lowest)
Ease of doing business index
  • An index created by the World Bank.
  • Higher rankings indicate better, usually simpler, regulations for businesses and stronger protections of property rights.
  • The most recent rankings come from the "Doing Business 2014" report. Ranking of economies was introduced in the "Doing Business 2006" report.
  • Economies are ranked on their ease of doing business, from 1 – 189.

Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI)
  • Since 1995, Transparency International (TI) has published the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) annually ranking countries "by their perceived levels of corruption, as determined by expert assessments and opinion surveys."
  • The CPI currently ranks 177 countries "on a scale from 100 (very clean) to 0 (highly corrupt)."
  • Transparency International (TI) is a non-governmental organization that monitors and publicizes corporate and political corruption in international development. The headquarters is located in Berlin, Germany.
  • 2013 - Rank 1 - Denmark (very clean)
  • 2013 - Rank 94 - India
  • 2013 - Rank 175 - Afghanistan,  North Korea and Somalia (highly corrupt)
Global Innovation Index
  • An annual publication which features, among others, a composite indicator that ranks countries/economies in terms of their enabling environment to innovation and their innovation outputs.
  • For the 2013 edition, Cornell University joined INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as co-publisher.
  • For the 2013 edition (6th edition), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Booz and Company, du and Huawei joined as Knowledge Partners.
  • The 2013 edition covers 142 economies.

Global Hunger Index (GHI)
  • A multidimensional statistical tool used to describe the state of countries’ hunger situation. The GHI measures progress and failures in the global fight against hunger. The GHI is updated once a year.
  • The Index was adopted and further developed by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and was first published in 2006 with the Welthungerhilfe, a German non-profit organization (NGO). Since 2007, the Irish NGO Concern Worldwide joined the group as co-publisher.
  • The 2013 GHI was calculated for 120 developing countries and countries in transition, 56 of which with a serious or worse hunger situation.
  • 2013 - Rank 78 - Burundi (extremely alarming hunger situation)
  • 2013 - Rank 63 - India (alarming hunger situation)
  • 2013 - Rank 1 - Albania and Mauritius (Countries with a 2013 GHI score of less than 5 are not included in the ranking)
Human Capital Index
  • A new index that measures countries on their ability to develop and deploy healthy, educated and able workers through four distinct pillars -- education, health and wellness, workforce and employment, and enabling environment.
  • Released by the World Economic Forum (WEF)
  • Total - 122 countries
  • 2013 - Rank 1 Switzerland
  • 2013 - Rank 78 India
  • 2013 - Rank 122 Yemen
Gender Inequality Index (GII)
  • A new index for measurement of gender disparity that was introduced in the 2010 Human Development Report 20th anniversary edition by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
  • This index is a composite measure which captures the loss of achievement, within a country, due to gender inequality, and uses three dimensions to do so: reproductive health, empowerment, and labor market participation.

    Recent political changes in Egypt

    Resignation of Hosni Mubarak
    • President Hosni Mubarak resigned on 11 February 2011, as a result of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 also known as the Lotus Revolution.
    • He was the 4th President of Egypt.
    • He ruled over the country for 29 years and 120 days.
    • Political party  - National Democratic Party
    • After Hosni Mubarak's resignation, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces(SCAF) assumed control of the country.
    Presidency of Mohamed Morsi
    • In June 2012, a presidential election was held in Egypt and Mohamed Morsi won.
    • President Morsi, a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Freedom and Justice Party(FJP), resigned from both organizations and took office on June 30, 2012.
    • This marked the end of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces transition period.
    2013 Egyptian coup d'état
    • On 22 November 2012, after granting himself unlimited powers to "protect" the nation, and the power to legislate without judicial oversight or review of his acts, Mohamed Morsi followed his decrees by making an effort to push through a referendum on an Islamist-supported draft constitution.
    • The move has led to massive protests and violent action throughout the country.
    • The events escalated forcing the military to announce that it would intervene on behalf of the protesters.
    • On 3 July 2013, Egyptian armed forces headed by Abdul Fatah al-Sisi acted on its 48 hours ultimatum to intervene "on behalf of the people", ousting President Mohamed Morsi in a military coup, suspending the constitution, appoints head of constitutional court as interim leader and calls for early elections.
    • After the coup d'état, the General Command of the Armed Forces assumed control of the country.
    Presidency of Adly Mansour
    • On 4 July 2013, Adly Mansour, chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt, was sworn in as acting president. 
    • On 14 July 2013Mohamed ElBaradei was sworn in as acting vice president.
    • On 16 July 2013, Hazem Al Beblawi was sworn in as interim Prime Minister of Egypt.
    • On 14 August 2013, following a violent crackdown by security forces on supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi, in which at least 525 people were killed, ElBaradei resigned as vice president. (now vice president post is vacant)

    Indira Gandhi Peace Prize and Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration

    Indira Gandhi Peace Prize
    • Known as Indira Gandhi Prize or Indira Gandhi Peace Prize or Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development
    • Prestigious award accorded annually by India to individuals or organizations in recognition of creative efforts toward promoting international peace, development and a new international economic order; ensuring that scientific discoveries are used for the larger good of humanity, and enlarging the scope of freedom. 
    • The prize carries a cash award of 25 lakh Indian rupees and a citation.
    • First awarded in 1986
    • 2011 - Ela Bhatt (Founder of SEWA - SEWA - Self-Employed Women's Association of India, a trade union for poor, self-employed women workers in India, founded in 1972)
    • 2012 - Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (President of Liberia)
    • 2013 - Angela Merkel (Chancellor of Germany)
    Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration
    • Prestigious award accorded annually by the Indian National Congress to distinguished persons/institutions for promoting national integration and understanding and fellowship amongst religious groups, communities, ethnic groups, cultures, languages and traditions of India and the strengthening, through thought and action of the nation's sense of solidarity.
    • The Award is given on the Martyrdom Day i.e. 31 October
    • The Award carries an amount of Rs. 5 lakh in cash and a citation.

    Committees constituted by RBI recently

    Committees constituted by RBI after Dr. Raghuram Rajan took charge as the new RBI Governor on September 4, 2013 :

    Nachiket Mor committee
    • RBI appointed a Committee on Comprehensive Financial Services for Small Businesses and Low-Income Households 
    • This 13 member committee has been tasked to develop a monitoring framework to track progress of financial inclusion across the country
    • Committee chairman - Nachiket Mor, Central Board Member, Reserve Bank of India
    • Other members include Shikha Sharma, Managing Director & CEO, Axis Bank, Dr. Vikram Pandit, former CEO of Citibank and A P Hota, MD & CEO of NPCI.
    • Financial inclusion or inclusive financing is the delivery of financial services at affordable costs to sections of disadvantaged and low-income segments of society.
    • Swabhiman - Financial inclusion plan of India
    • Nachiket Mor was the chairman of the ICICI foundation for the inclusive growth.
    • Khan committee constituted by RBI in 2004 was tasked to formulate guidelines for financial inclusion in India and Nachiket Mor committee was tasked to develop a monitoring framework to track progress of financial inclusion across the country. Khan committee was headed by the present RBI deputy governor H. R. Khan.
    Bimal Jalan committee
    • RBI formed a High Level Advisory Committee (HLAC) to recommend granting new licenses to the private banks
    • Head - Bimal Jalan, Former RBI Governor
    • Members - Usha Thorat (former RBI Deputy Governor), C B Bhave (former SEBI chairman) and Nachiket Mor (financial sector expert and Central Board Member, Reserve Bank of India).
    • There are 26 applicants from public and private sector for bank licenses.
    • The public sector applicants include India Post and IFCI (Industrial Finance Corporation of India)
    • The private sector applicants include Tata Sons, Anil Ambani's Reliance ADA group, Kumar Mangalam Birla's Aditya Birla Group, Bajaj and L&T finance
    • After the RBI issued clarifications on the norms for the new banking licence, a few aspirants such as Mahindra finance opted out from getting new bank license.
    Urjit Patel committee
    • RBI constituted an Expert Committee to examine the current monetary policy framework of the Reserve Bank of India and recommend what needs to be done to revise and strengthen it with a view to, inter alia, making it transparent and predictable.
    • Chairman - Dr. Urjit Patel, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India
    • Final report in December, 2013

    Sambamurthy committee
    • RBI constituted a Technical Committee on Mobile Banking, to examine the options/alternatives including the feasibility of using encrypted SMS based funds transfer using an application that can run on any type of handset for expansion of mobile banking in the country.
    • Chairman - B. Sambamurthy, Director, IDRBT (Institute for Development & Research in Banking Technology) (Chairman)
    • Member Secretary - Vijay Chugh, Chief General Manager, RBI
    • Committee members include Anthony Thomas (Chief Information Officer, Vodafone India Ltd) and officials from SBI, ICICI, HDFC and Axis Bank.
    • The Committee will submit its report by end of December 2013.

    Immediate Payment Service (IMPS)
    • capable of processing P2P(Person to Person), P2A (Person to Account) and P2M (Person to Merchant) remittance
    • transactions can be initiated from Mobile, Internet as well as ATM channel.
    • In addition to banking customers,non-banking customers can also avail the IMPS facility through Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved PPIs.

    Some useful information about the present RBI governor and past governors

    Dr. Raghuram Govinda Rajan
    • Dr. Raghuram Rajan assumed charge as the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on September 4, 2013.
    • Prior to this, he was the Chief Economic Advisor, Ministry of Finance, Government of India and the Eric J. Gleacher Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago’s Booth School. Between 2003 and 2006, Dr. Rajan was the Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund.
    • He has co-authored Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists with Luigi Zingales in 2003. He then wrote Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy, for which he was awarded the Financial Times-Goldman Sachs prize for best business book in 2010.
    • Dr. Rajan is a member of the Group of Thirty.
    The Group of Thirty, often abbreviated to G30, is an international body of leading financiers and academics which aims to deepen understanding of economic and financial issues and to examine consequences of decisions made in the public and private sectors related to these issues. 
    Current Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India, Montek Singh Ahluwalia was a former member of Group of Thirty.
    • Dr. Raghuram Rajan was the President of the American Finance Association in 2011 and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In January 2003, the American Finance Association awarded Dr. Rajan the inaugural Fischer Black Prize for the best finance researcher under the age of 40. The other awards he has received include the global Indian of the year award from NASSCOM in 2011, the Infosys prize for the Economic Sciences in 2012, and the Center for Financial Studies-Deutsche Bank Prize for financial economics in 2013.

    Past Governors of RBI
    • Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was the 15th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
    • Sir Osborne Smith was the first Governor of the Reserve Bank.  He resigned prior to the completion of his term of office of three and a half years. Sir Osborne, however, did not sign any bank notes during his tenure.
    • Sir James Braid Taylor was the second Governor of the Reserve Bank.
    • Sir C D Deshmukh was the third Governor and the first Indian Governor of the Reserve Bank.
    • Dr. C Rangarajan was the 19th Governor of the Reserve Bank. Currently, he is the Chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council.
    • Dr. D. Subbarao was the 22nd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
